Two time Formula 1 world Champion Fernando Alonso has announced his plans to hand over his Toyota GAZOO RACING seat in WEC, once the 2019 Le Mans 24hr as finished.
Fernando will remain with Toyota GAZOO RACING but has hinted after his win at Le Mans in 2018, he is at the end of a chapter, ready to explore future challenges within motorsport elsewhere hinting that he may be focusing his attempts to finally obtain the elusive “Triple Crown”
Brendon Hartley himself, who has alot of experience within WEC and a former Le Mans winner with Porsche, is very thankful for the opportunity, especially after his disastrous year in Formula 1 with Toro Rosso.
Brendon thanked the team and elaborated saying;
” I know how professional and motivated this team is following my years competing against them in WEC, so I am fired up and am very happy to be joining them. I believe I am returning to WEC an even stronger driver following my experience in Formula 1″
Fernando Alonso however still has work to do and has stated he will continue to work hard with the team and strive for the best until his last day. Fernando did hint that his choice for moving on was the Triple Crown as he was quoted in the press release saying;
” Winning Le Mans is one of the highlights of my career as part of my Triple Crown challenge and I will always remember that victory which we achieved together as a team last year. Now is a good time to take on new challenges and there are many interesting opportunities to explore within TOYOTA GAZOO Racing “
Brendon Hartley will join fellow drivers Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, José María López, Sébastien and Kazuki as a race driver for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing in WEC next season, which begins on 1 September at Silverstone and concludes on 14 June 2020 at Le Mans. The driver line-up of each TS050 HYBRID will be confirmed later.
